A creed held rather than a god addressed
A statement of belief settled by a council and recited in a congregation, which is an attachment to a set of propositions with an authority behind them and nobody at the far end.
The register this site is about is usually a relationship with a person who cannot reciprocate. A creed inverts it without removing it: what is held is a structure of propositions and the authority that settles them, and the person reciting it is bound by the recitation rather than conversing with anyone. The faith-as-structure shelf exists because the divine shelf cannot hold this - a creed is not somebody with a biography you can get wrong, it is an arrangement, and the tie is to the arrangement.
