The 1990s extension to live people who respond in real time - streamers, hosts, people who read your comment. The bond is still fundamentally one-sided, but the other side can now hear you.
The term that made the field relevant to the internet, and the reason the word changed: the phenomenon did not, only the possibility of contact. It is the same bond with the floor removed, which is why it feels better and goes wrong faster.
