ACCOUNTABILITY
The open ledger
A citation that nobody checked is worth less than one that is — but most of the web does not tell you which you are looking at. This site records two states and prints both. This is what the catalogue currently measures.
What "verified" means here
Entry-level verification: an entry is marked verified once a person here has checked its central claims against source material they actually opened. Individual records on that entry keep their own states and are audited in their own time - a checked entry can still be carrying secondary references nobody has read.
61 of 248 entries are marked verified, which means a person here read source material and checked the entry's central claims against it. It does not mean every reference on those entries has been read - 108 of 567 records still have no locator at all.
The three states a record is in
- 287 retrievable — a reader can open the record and find the work named. This is not a claim that it was read.
- 234 unverified — the work has been looked at and is not yet locatable. The honest state of a citation still in progress.
- 46 needs-source — not a citation at all. A string that was never a reference, recorded as such rather than dressed up as one.
What is not a deficit
17 entries carry no citation at all, and that is not an omission. They are the site's own argument — claims with no external referent to attach a source to — and a claim of that kind is not an unsourced claim. They are counted separately here so they cannot be read as one.
