The eight that ran that day, frozen as published. Later builds do not revise a day.

  1. 01

    Persona 1891

    The Divine Sarah

Sarah Bernhardt toured more like a head of state than a player: when she sailed for New York in 1891 the crossing was covered the way a royal visit is, and 'Divine Sarah' was by then the whole public's phrase for her.

  2. 02

    Character 1904

If you believe, clap your hands

The play that asks the whole audience to save a dying fairy by clapping - and has received the same answer, in the same room, for more than a century.

  3. 03

    Companion 1958

    The tape could not answer

A man on his sixty-ninth birthday plays a recording he made at thirty-nine, and has the conversation the tape cannot have back.

  4. 04

    Cosmology 1976

    The audience became the show

Launched as a small London stage musical in 1973, filmed in 1975, and from 1976 screened at midnight before a room that shouted back: The Rocky Horror Picture Show ran while its audience performed it, wearing the costumes, speaking the lines, improvising replies.

  5. 05

    Cosmology 1985

    Vote for the murderer

A musical of Dickens' unfinished novel that stops where the novel stops and turns the cliffhanger over to the seats: the audience votes who murdered Edwin Drood, who the disguised Dick Datchery is and which two characters end up together, and the cast performs the chosen ending that night.

  6. 06

    Character 1758

The wall exists to keep you out

Diderot invented the wall in 1758 for the purpose of stopping the audience noticing.

  7. 07

    Persona 2013

A slightly more awkward version of himself

A comedian who stages real situations for people who have not read the script, and performs a slightly more awkward version of himself inside them - the manufacturing is the show, and the audience has been told so from the beginning.

  8. 08

    Companion 1922

    Most faithfully, Rin Tin Tin

A German Shepherd found on a battlefield became one of the biggest silent-film stars, and the fan mail that arrived for him was answered with a glossy portrait signed by a paw.
