DIVINE
The one who is addressed and cannot answer, and is not supposed to. The oldest documented case on this site, and the one the previous ten sections had no room for. Margery Kempe is the founding document and she was in none of them.

The addressed divine 0 stories · 6 entries
Prayer as a one-sided relationship with a being who is understood to hear and not to reply. Kempe's certainty that Christ's love had entered her is a parasocial claim in every structural respect except that the other end is supposed to be real.
- Binding1438 · A mechanism or tacticKempe again. The mechanism is described FROM her case, so it belongs with the addressed divine rather than as a general mechanism about performance.
- Margery Kempe1373 · A personDescribed an unbreakable bond with Jesus, was mocked for it, was reviled by her family, and in 1438 dictated a book that persuaded other women to do the same. She is the founding document of the site and she fits nowhere in a taxonomy built around performers, which is why DIVINE exists. [otherness: She addresses God directly, in writing, for years, and receives no confirmation. Placed here as well as under officer, because the whole manuscript is one long unsolicited message to somebody who has never answered.]
- Am I not here, I who am your mother?1531 · A workAddressed, never met: nobody in the record meets her, and the other end is understood to hear - the founding sentence of the devotion is her answer to a worried man. The shelf is for the terminal addressee, where silence is read as meaningful rather than as failure, and this silence carries one exception on the record: a reply in Nahuatl to a man who was never able to prove he heard it. What the archive holds in place of a conversation is a text, a cloth, a calendar and five centuries of witnesses.
- The Book of My First Showings1438 · A workDictated by Margery Kempe describing her experiences of Christ's love, her suffering, and her certainty that she had been chosen. The oldest surviving parasocial document on the site, and the reason DIVINE had to be built. [otherness: Visions are received, not met. The figure on the far side never speaks back, which is what makes the record of them possible.]
- The icon answers nothing787 · A workFiled
divine/christ, on the shelf's own test: "Is the relationship expressed by being addressed rather than by being watched, and is the other end understood to hear?" The icon is not watched; it is venerated, kissed, carried in procession and censed, and the Second Council of Nicaea's own formula - "the honour paid to the image passes to the prototype" - states outright that the address is aimed through the panel at a being understood to hear it. That is the shelf, not a metaphor. The counter ispersona/idol: an image encountered at a distance, whose defining property is exactly the one the iconoclasm controversy was fought over. The idol'snotsays "a persona, who is addressed as a performer and could be anywhere else", and that is precisely what ninety years of argument denied about the icon - it could not be anywhere else, because the point of it was that it was not a performer but a window onto a hearer. The paint alone was not the attachment and the dismissal of the image as merely painted timber invaded by no god is recorded as the losing argument, because the controversy's own outcome confirmed the addressed-behind-the-panel reading. Contestable, and recorded as such. - The priest100 · A mechanism or tacticA person who hears the specifics, performs the ritual, and knows the family history, on a repeating cycle. The officer and the divine in one role, which is why the theology entries had nowhere to go before DIVINE existed.
The saint and the ancestor 0 stories · 4 entries
The dead who are addressed because they are available, and who are petitioned precisely because they cannot answer. A relationship maintained in one direction by design.
- Grieving a person you never met1970 · A mechanism or tacticGrieving a person you never met. The nearest attachment target is the one who is gone and still addressed - the saint and the ancestor. The register is archive; the object is the departed.
- The dead kept in the cave-70000 · A workThe dead treated as somewhere you go rather than something you leave. Placed under the ancestor shelf rather than the myth shelf because nobody wrote the myth down: there is a pit, a scoop, stones, and a repeated return - the address is in the archaeology. [otherness: Not transcendent, which was the previous reading: nobody addresses the dead here. The dead are kept within reach and treated as somewhere you go, which is belief in presence with nothing to verify it. Re-reading it changes the claim, so the reason is printed rather than swapped silently.]
- The wax masks in the hall-250 · A workA wax likeness of a specific dead relative, kept in the house and never able to answer. Same shelf as neanderthal-burial, and that is deliberate: burying a relative you intend to keep within reach and casting one are the same act at 70,000 years' remove. What the Roman adds is the paperwork - the titulus, the stemma, the law that let a bride carry them to a new house. [otherness: An actor walks the mask in the funeral procession and the titulus does the conversing - the eye-holes and lip gap were cut so the actor could see and speak. That is the
madetest exactly: somebody is working it. It also explains why the entry could never be about divine address, which is what the divine shelf had implied.] - Beads, and one bull-34000 · A workSame shelf as neanderthal-burial, deliberately, and the pair is the argument: a pit you keep coming back to is one thing, and a site where the rich burials and the plain ones sit side by side for thirty thousand years is a different claim. The one uniting detail is the beads, and the analysis says they were about life, not death - which is the site declining to convert archaeology into a single relationship. [otherness: Beads, a bull's scapula and a grave good. Presence maintained by deposit, not by petition - the same structure as the Shanidar burial and for the same reason: nothing is addressed, somebody is kept.]
The deity of a system 0 stories · 1 entry
A figure inside a coherent body of myth, met in ritual rather than in narrative. Gods are the original parasocial object: consistently characterised, never reachable.
The abstract absolute 0 stories · 4 entries
Mystical union as doctrine: the claim that a person can be joined to something total, and the problem that no available theology has settled what happens on the other side.
- Eleven thousand years of pillars-9500 · A workProvisional, and deliberately so. The pillars are anthropomorphic and the UNESCO nomination reads them as 'ancestors, perhaps even incipient deities', but nobody has settled it and other readings make them protective or totemic figures. abstract-absolute is the shelf for a represented being whose identity is exactly what is in dispute - put them under saint-ancestor and the entry would be arguing for one side of a live debate by filing it. [otherness: Represented beings whose identity is the dispute. UNESCO's own wording is 'believed to be', and that is exactly the axis: addressed, not confirmed. Filed here rather than under saint-ancestor so the file does not argue one side of an open debate.]
- Mystical union · A term or conceptThe doctrine that a person can be joined to the divine, described by theologians as an encounter between two. It is the one relationship on this site whose reciprocity is a live theological question rather than a design failure, and that is why it is filed where the argument is unfinished. [otherness: Union with the divine is the address case with no candidate for reciprocity in it at all: the test asks whether it is addressed rather than met, and nothing in the structure offers a reply.]
- A cohort nobody in it has met1965 · An event or momentThe object is an absence met by negation - a cohort held by what its members are not - rather than a figure who can be petitioned, which separates it cleanly from myth-deity.
- Wishful thinking1940 · A term or conceptThe projection account of parasocial feeling. It belongs with mystical union: both are doctrines about whether the tie points outward at anything or only inward at the person holding it.
